Coexistence of a 2D discommensuration wall network and of a hexatic molecular ordering in a liquid crystalline phase

چکیده
2014 A new series of polar mesogens exhibits both a smectic B phase and a ribbon phase Sc. In this series, an incommensurate hexatic B phase has also been found. In this phase, a long wavelength modulation of the dipolar orientation is superimposed over the in-layer 2D hexagonal array. The structural features of this new phase are compared to those of the normal hexatic B and Sc phases. J. Physique 48 (1987) 847-853 MAl 1987, Classification Physics Abstracts 61.30E 64.70M

Comparison of 2D melting criteria in a colloidal system.
We use super-paramagnetic spherical particles which are arranged in a two-dimensional monolayer at a water/air interface to investigate the crystal to liquid phase transition. According to the KTHNY theory a crystal melts in thermal equilibrium by two continuous phase transitions into the isotropic liquid state with an intermediate phase, commonly known as the hexatic phase. We verify the signi...

We investigate the orientational order of transverse polarization vectors of long, stiff polymer molecules and their coupling to bond orientational and positional order in high density mesophases. Homogeneous ordering of transverse polarization vector promotes distortions in the hexatic phase, whereas inhomogeneous ordering precipitates crystallization of the 2D sections with different orientat...
متن کاملMelting of colloidal crystal films.
We study melting mechanisms in single and polycrystalline colloidal films composed of diameter-tunable microgel spheres with short-ranged repulsive interactions and confined between two glass walls. Thick films (>4 layers), thin-films (≤4 layers), and monolayers exhibit different melting behaviors. Thick films melt from grain boundaries in polycrystalline solid films and from film-wall interfac...
متن کاملClustering and phase behaviour of attractive active particles with hydrodynamics.
We simulate clustering, phase separation and hexatic ordering in a monolayered suspension of active squirming disks subject to an attractive Lennard-Jones-like pairwise interaction potential, taking hydrodynamic interactions between the particles fully into account. By comparing the hydrodynamic case with counterpart simulations for passive and active Brownian particles, we elucidate the relati...
متن کاملFrank's constant in the hexatic phase.
Using videomicroscopy data of a two-dimensional colloidal system the bond-order correlation function G{6} is calculated and used to determine both the orientational correlation length xi{6} in the liquid phase and the modulus of orientational stiffness, Frank's constant F{A}, in the hexatic phase. The latter is an anisotropic fluid phase between the crystalline and the isotropic liquid phase. F...
